About the Trek:
The landlocked Kingdom of Lesotho’s Eastern international border is the watershed of the Drakensberg and the summit of Mafadi, in fact, forms part of this watershed.
We start the trek from remote Injisuthi area far from the hustle and bustle of the fancy hotels and spar resorts of the more commercially popular areas. This coupled with the immense rising basalt walls of the escarpment – with the impressive Injisuthi Triplets proudly on display – give the trek a committing feel (because it is) and a real sense of adventure.

The First and last days are relatively genteel 3-5 hours with moderate height gain/loss (+-900m) with the second day being the most strenuous as we ascend the Escarpment via a steep pass, then cross a valley and ridge to arrive at Injisuti Upper Cave – without doubt one of the most spectacular caves in the Drakensberg. The descent is again split over 2 days, but as the going is downhill, it tends to be less exhausting.
Most of the walking is on good paths, personally I do not wear boots unless I’m expecting snow, preferring instead solid approach shoes.
The entire area is a proclaimed wilderness area and is also now a World Heritage Site. All the mountain streams may be used for drinking water without any purification needed.

When to visit
Year-Round.
My personal preference is the shoulder seasons – Autumn and Spring, but Summer and Winter are good too. In summer the heat and afternoon thunderstorms are a menace and in winter the cold (temps of -10degC up high at night) adds a certain crisp-edge to the evenings. Snowfalls are not uncommon, and cold wet and windy weather can be expected at anytime of year!

Clients need to bring the usual personal items:
• Waterproof/breathable shell
• Fleeces
• Backpack (at least 45L)
• Boots are recommended but good shoes will suffice – ask us!
