A mini Traverse is a more time-friendly version of the 10 day Grand Traverse, without any sacrifice in experience. The Drakensberg Mountain range, home to some of the finest adventure trekking around - if you are looking for a feeling of BIG, wide open space, The Drakensberg will give you that - just look at the Gallery (all photo's in the gallery were taken during guided hikes, and none are professionally 'posed').

Hikes are graded for their technical difficulty and the grade is not necessarily an indication of how exposed or strenuous they are. Each hike does carry an indication for it's suitability level - easy | moderate | strenuous as well as an exposure rating out of three.

Modelled on the famous Grand Traverse, the Mini is a high reward in a concentrated timeframe.

A ll of the days spent on The Mini Traverse are in an environment which, when calm, is benign and peaceful. requires the use of lightweight mountain tents and caves for accommodation. The caves are huge overhangs of rock and can give good shelter from the elements. Here we describe a route to be taken for the “Mini” in 5 days and 4 nights.

Day 1: Sentinel to Ifidi basin - 15km

Day 2: Ifidi basin to Fangs Pass - 10km

Day 3: Fangs Pass via Hanging Valleys to Ledger’s Cave. Spectacular view await - 22kms.

Day 4: Ledges CAve - Twins Cave - 10km

Day 5: Twins Cave - Cathedral Peak Hotel via Bell-Twins Traverse.

Day 6 (optional): Many people prefer to break day 3 (above) into 2, pushing the following days out by a day.

About the Trek:
The landlocked Kingdom of Lesotho’s Eastern international border is the watershed of the Drakensberg.
We start the trek from Sentinel Peak and head up the chain ladders to Mont Aux Sauces then trek for 3 days along the Escarpment at around 3000m asl! These factors give the trek a committing feel (because it is) and a real sense of adventure.

Most of the walking is on good paths, personally I do not wear boots unless I’m expecting snow, preferring instead solid approach shoes.
The entire area is a proclaimed wilderness area and is also now a World Heritage Site. All the mountain streams may be used for drinking water without any purification needed.

When to visit
Year-Round.
My personal preference is the shoulder seasons – Autumn and Spring, but Summer and Winter are good too. In summer the heat and afternoon thunderstorms are a menace and in winter the cold (temps of -10degC up high at night) adds a certain crisp-edge to the evenings. Snowfalls are not uncommon, and cold wet and windy weather can be expected at anytime of year!

Clients need to bring the usual personal items:
• Waterproof/breathable shell
• Fleeces
• Backpack (at least 45L)
• Boots are recommended but good shoes will suffice – ask us!
• Personal items
